zefhar Following Ben's music has proven to be a very interesting journey so far. Monaro is a short release, but one in which you can already perceive a musical shift towards a more thought-provoking direction. The ending section reminds me a bit of the Shadow of The Colossus OST finale, except for Ben's signature use of bright, uplifting chords. I wish it lasted a bit longer... Favorite track: Monaro II.

about

This new EP was in response to, and inspired by, 'My Heart is a Little Wild Thing', a new novel by Nigel Featherstone, which was published in May 2022 by Ultimo Press / Hardie Grant.

Nigel and I have become friends over the last few years, my first album 'Komorebi' having somehow found it's way to Nigel, all the way over in Australia. When he asked if I'd be interested in reading his new novel ahead of the release, and seeing if it inspired the making of some new music, I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Monaro I & II were written during the reading of 'My Heart is a Little Wild Thing', reading in the evening each day, and then working on music the next morning in response. There were pictures in my mind, colours, vibrations in my body - all from the words Nigel wrote. I was inspired. It was easy.

I have never visited the Monaro. I hope to one day.

After I finished reading the novel, and finished these two songs, Nigel sent me some pictures he had taken on his last visit to the Monaro, to see if any would work as artwork for this EP. I couldn't believe it. These pictures were the ones I saw in my mind while reading and writing. The colours, the scenes, everything was exactly as I had imagined it - all from his novel.

One of these pictures has been used as the artwork [above].

‘When I was a boy. We like to think we are the beginning of our story, but we are never the beginning. For the Monaro, the story began fifty million years ago, as volcanic activity sent lave flooding across the landscape. What remains of that time is a skin of basalt, one that might be up to two hundred metres thick. Geological drilling indicates that five million years separate each of the lava flows. Five million years; fifty million years. When I was a boy.’ [My Heart is a Little Wild Thing - Nigel Featherstone]

Nigel Featherstone is the author of Bodies of Men which was longlisted for the 2020 ARA Historical Novel Prize, Highly Commended for the 2020 ACT Book of the Year, shortlisted in the 2019 Queensland Literary Awards, and received a 2019 Canberra Critics Circle Award. Nigel lives on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales and spends considerable time in Canberra, the national capital of Australia. His new novel is My Heart is a Little Wild Thing, which was released early in 2022.
